    A common species on the dry uplands of coastal plains, piedmont, andMississippi valley region. Leaves are deciduous and of variable shapes. The upper crown has 5-7 lobes with falcate sinuses and the lower crown is 3-lobed, pubescent and rust-colored below. Twigs are to 1/4", acute, and somewhat pubescent. Fruit is to 5/8" with a sometimes striate nut with stellate pubescence 1/3 enclosed in a thin shallow cap. Bark is similar to Q. velutina.
