An important medium-sized species in Europe that is an ornamental in the U.S. "Copper" beech has red-brown leaves and other varieties exist. Leaves are similar to F. grandifolia, but are often smaller with fewer teeth. Twigs are similar to F. grandifolia but twigs and bud scales are often pubescent. Fruit is similar to F. grandifolia but larger. Bark is similar to F. grandifolia.
