    A multi-stemmed shrub common in the understory of relatively dry woods throughout the northeatsern U.S., the Appalachians, northern Lake States extending into southern Canada, and the Pacific coast. Leaves are broad, oval, and doubly serrate with an acute tip, often with a cordate base. Twigs are glabrous. Buds are ovoid with whitish tips. Fruit is edible with an involucre (husk) prolonged into a narrow beak.
