A shrub found on wet sites in the eastern U.S. Leaves are alternate, simple, deciduous, elliptical to obvate, apex acuminate, serrate or doubly serrate. Twigs have superposed buds, and a single bundle scar. Fruit is a globose, bright red, drupe-like berry, usually in pairs in the axils of leaves.
