A small understory tree in the southeastern U.S.; the largest of the native ornamental hollies and a common ornamental used in Christmas wreaths. Leaves are alternate, simple, persistent, leathery, elliptical, and entire or spiny-toothed. Twigs have leaf scars with a single bundle scar. Fruit is a red drupe and the species is dioecious.
