A European tree and a common ornamental with purple-leaved varieties. The leaves are 5-7 lobed along the entire margins with milky sap in the petioles. The twigs are large, blunt, ovoid, and reddish brown with imbricate buds. The bark has anastomosing ridges. The fruit is 2" long, widely divergent and matures in the fall.
