Peat Spawning Killifish
Tank
This is a 5 gallon tank with a "goldfish" sponge bubble filter (shaped like
a 4 leaf clover, roughly), a bunch of peat moss, duckweed (grows really
well in peat moss - surprised me!) and 3 killies. The killies are...
Nothobrachius guentheri, one male and two females. I bought them
at a club auction in spring of 1997. They are doing well. It was hard to
feed them at first - they'd only eat frozen bloodworms, and often they
weren't interested in food at all, but eventually they warmed up to flake
food, and now eat like little piggies. The females are almost always
round with eggs (I hope), and I just took out my first batch of peat to
"winter". They don't live long (the adults), so hopefully I'll have some
hatchlings in a few weeks. I'm not sure how often people harvest the
peat from breeding killie tanks, and I guess the eggs are too small to
see - I didn't spot any. We'll see.. another adventure..
