Other Populations

In addition to the populations already described, when some or all of the subjects are likely to be vulnerable to coercion or undue influence, such as prisoners, pregnant women, neonates, or fetuses, additional safeguards should be implemented to protect the rights and welfare of the subjects. The IRB will help with this determination in a broad manner, but determining the specific circumstances of each individual subject is the responsibility of the researcher.

For example, the subect's participation should not be motivated by “free medical services”, compensation or bonuses to complete the research. This is a judgment call on the part of the researcher and should be determined on a case-by-case basis.
