429 South Willard Street

This brick house is thought to date from the 1860's. The 1869 Beers Atlas labels this as the home of A. Parady. According to a descendant, "A. Parady" was Angele (or Angeline) Paradis, the widow of Charles Paradis, who had come to Burlington in 1816 to build what is now the Unitarian church. Angeline's son Edward (Alfred Edouard) and his wife Marguerite Massé also lived at 429 South Willard Street. (1) The Historic Sites & Structures Survey states that this was the home of Edward Parady, who in addition to being a carpenter was employed by local quarry owner Guy Willard. Beginning in 1903 Ernest E. Smith is listed as residing at 429. Smith was a bookkeeper at the Baldwin Refrigeration Co. in 1900. In 1910 Smith had been promoted to assistant manager, and by 1930 was president of the company. He continued to occupy the house until the mid-1960's. The house was remodeled in the Colonial Revival style when Smith bought the house in 1903. (2)
