309/311 South Union Street

The building located at 311 South Union Street may have been torn down and rebuilt according to the Historic Sites and Structures Survey.(1) However, I have been unable to find evidence of this. This location was the residence of John Griffen on the 1869 Beer's Atlas. Griffin was employed by Blodgett & Co. in 1865. By 1873 Griffen was a partner in the firm of Wheelock & Griffen, plumbers and gas fitters. In the late 1870's Griffen operated a retail business dealing in stoves, plumbing, and gas fitting. Coming full circle, 1900 finds John working as a plumber for G.S. Blodgett. Griffen is listed as an occupant of the house as late as 1894. From 1900 until the teens, F.G. Fletcher, a Church Street shoe merchant, occupies the house. After Fletcher, physician Charles K. Johnson resided at 311. While Johnson was a resident, his office was located in the home. From this time forward the house appears as a duplex.(2)
