I don't
recall people being particularly aware of the lights, and if they had been
asked to take notes about their experience I doubt they'd have said that
many of these towns were "well-lit." People might have said they
liked the atmosphere -- a vague but perfect assessment. As Jane Jacobs pointed
out so long ago, it's really a combination of things, some of them hardly
noticeable, that add up into great places.
