UVM Information Technology Executive Council Proposal:

Humanities Technology Center

Object: To make UVM a "world player" in the area of advanced technologies in the humanities.

Many people couple science with technology, yet emerging, break-through, Internet technology has often come from humanities disciplines. The work that humanities scholars do, multi-lingual, image-rich, synthesizing vast disparate concentrations of inf ormation, pushes the boundaries of computing power (cf: http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/~jmu2m/nih.html).

Building on the successful models at the University of Virginia and others, this proposal seeks to establish a Center for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. This Center would provide a space for creation of new technology models to be applied to humanities sch olarship. It would include equipment but more importantly it would provide technologists to work with and support faculty and students on ground-breaking projects. It would be a resource center for humanities scholars.
