Principles & Applications of Renewable
Energy
Internship Reflection
I learned about inspecting a buildings
thermal envelope, and energy efficiency. I used the blower door test, and
infrared camera to inspect the thermal envelope. I helped to seal up the
thermal envelope of a home, using the afore mentioned
techniques and then caulking and spray foaming the leaky areas. I also helped
inspect the furnace and oven for CO2 discharge, a concern for a sealed up home.
Basic behavioral alterations can help save energy too. Turning off lights when
not in use, unplugging electrical devices not in use and keeping the thermostat
just a few degrees closer to the outdoor temperature can greatly reduce energy
consumption.
I also got some hands on experience in
demolition and prepping a roof for a new better insulated
outfit. We spent a lot of time in meetings brainstorming ideas to bring energy
efficiency to business owners, and landlords. We went into detail about energy
efficient new buildings, and retrofitting old buildings during meeting time.
