INTERNSHIP EVALUATION::
For the field work portion of CDAE 291, I was interning for Allan Bullis, owner
of Efficiency Innovations, LLC. Along with Al, nine other students, and myself
created a non-profit organization, Common Sense Energy. The goal of Common Sense
Energy is to ?help building owners save money with energy conservation and efficiency.?
In order to do this we traveled to various locations and performed tests on
the houses, such as using an infrared scanner to help minimize heat loss through
the building. We also performed blower door tests in order to provide information
for the homeowner of the amount of energy that is consumed due to air leakage.
The blower door is a fan mounted to a door frame which lowers the air pressure
inside by pulling air out of the house. The higher the pressure translates to
more cracks and openings in the house. I also attended multiple South Burlington
Energy Committee meetings, where South Burlington residents discussed energy
initiatives to aid in the reduction of energy use in the town.
Working with Al has been a great experience and very interesting. Having been
able to get hands-on experience has helped in many ways to increase my knowledge
of energy use in buildings and the way in which to solve these problems. I would
highly recommend working with Al if you are interested in energy efficiency
or any related topic.
