The Oaxacan coast: Puerto Escondido

After nine days in the city of Oaxaca, we departed for the coast.  Rather than take a 6-7 hour bus ride winding up and down mountain ranges, we decided to take a 30 minute flight over the mountains.  Our plane was a 7-seater but we were the only passengers.  Sarah got to be the co-pilot.

We stayed at the Posada Real Best Western, the only "all-inclusive" experience we've ever had.  It was a delightful oasis on the hot, dry coast.  Having booked a room sight unseen, we were pleased that there were no high-rises to be seen, only dry coast and miles of beaches.  We met Helen's brother, Ty, and his son, Peter, there and the cousins had three days together.  Our major decisions each day were when to move from the upper swimming pool (near the hotel) to the lower pool (by the beach), when to eat meals, which card games to play, when to start drinking pina coladas and Margaritas, how far to walk down the beach, and whether we wanted to swim after dinner. . . . pretty cushy life!

Margaret and Sarah found lots of coconuts and decided to open one up "with their bare hands".  Armed only with a tiny Swiss army knife, a piece of bent re-bar, and a rock, the broke off the outer husk (90 minutes) and cracked the seed inside (1 minute, one hard throw on concrete).  We drank fresh coconut milk and ate the meat inside.

Another afternoon was spent making an elaborate sand-village, complete with coconut meat-lined swimming pool.

We went into town (Puerto Escondido) and, within seconds of hitting the beach, were accosted by numerous boatmen offering rides.  We accepted the offer and headed off for an hour tour of the coast.  We saw a big school of dolphin and rode along with them for several minutes.  At one point, five dolphins were out of the water, arching above it before they dove back down.  Margaret saw a swimming sea turtle, but the rest of us didn't.

Afterwards, we walked along the coast on a concrete path that wove into bays and had lovely places to over-look the ocean.

A morning of golf and a game of Hearts and we were off to the airport, Ty and Peter to California, the rest of us to Mexico City, where we caught a bus back to Morelia.
