BIO

Dr. George F. Pinder holds joint appointments in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Science at the University of Vermont. Dr. Pinder served as Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering and Operations Research from 1980 to 1989 and as Dean of the College of Engineering and Mathematics from 1989-1996 at the University of Vermont. Dr. Pinder was a research hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Washington for four years prior to joining the Civil Engineering Department at Princeton University as an Associate Professor and was promoted to full Professor five years later.  

Dr. Pinder's principal area of scholarly activity is the development and application of applied mathematics, especially numerical mathematics to solve groundwater contamination and supply problems using computers.

Dr. Pinder has published approximately one hundred and thirty five papers in refereed journals in the area of quantitative analysis of subsurface flow and transport.  Dr. Pinder has also published twelve books. The latest `Numerical methods for solving partial differential equations: a comprehensive introduction for scientists and engineers’, was published by John Wiley and Sons in 2017. Dr. Pinder is the founding Editor of the journals "Advances in Water Resources" and "Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations,".
