1960 Roger Amidon wrote, “This year at retirement, I was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. A few days ago, I returned from Taiwan, where I’ve been a visiting scholar at Taiwan’s National Defense Medical Center in Taipei. This is Taiwan’s version of Walter Reed and Bethesda Medical Centers rolled into one.”

1961 Dr. Harry Oldham Brooks represented UVM at the inauguration of John V. Lombardi as chancellor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Harry said he had a wonderful time.

1962 Ed Freedman has completed a $26 million development, including 96 affordable-housing units and a new facility for the Hearing, Speech, and Deafness Center in Seattle. With the project’s completion, he retired as the center’s executive director after 16 years. He has returned to providing management consultation and interim directorship for non-profit agencies. He can be reached at edfreed man@attbi.com. Phil Judd will be returning to Burlington, Vt., in August for his 45th high school reunion, where he looks forward to seeing his BHS/UVM classmates. He has stayed in touch with Ron Fine, Don Nobel, and Dick Diefenbach from UVM. Phil’s store, The Painted Horse, celebrated 25 years in business. They are the oldest and largest educational toy and teaching material store in New England. They also do a catalog business, catering to school districts. On Thanksgiving, he was blessed to have had all four of his children, their spouses, and two grandchildren visiting, mostly from Maine. A son and his family live in Orange, Calif. Phil chose to walk the Camino De Santiago in Northern Spain for six weeks in April instead of his usual trip to Mazatlan, Mexico, in the winter. For the past two years, he has been substitute teaching at Green Mountain Union High School and Springfield High School. Andrew also teaches statistics at the Community College of Vermont, located in the Howard Dean Educational Center in Springfield.

1963 David Haas of Pound Ridge, N.Y., is the new chairman of the Jewish Home & Hospital Lifecare System’s Bronx division’s regional board. He is chairman and CEO of DRH Associates, a financial consulting firm specializing in financial planning and financing in the media, entertainment, and related industries.

1966 UVM alums gathered at the Montpelier, Vt., home of Ken and Kathy Nunan McGuckin for a winter weekend in early February. The group included Frank ’64 and Claire Berka Willis, Chip ’65 and Marcia Ely Bechtold, Jack ’65 and Judy Claypoole Stewart. A good time was had by all. Linda Riggs Abbott is now retired from her job as a clinical nurse specialist in behavioral pediatrics from the Brown Medical School clinical faculty. She and her husband, David, who is also retired, now live in Montpelier, Vt. John Beck reported that he retired in June 2002 after 34 years with Exxon Mobil Corporation. He and his wife, Sharon Peloquin Beck ’67, have been building a house in the Governor’s Land Community At Two Rivers (James and Chickahomy). They have three children.

1967 James Cunningham is now serving as assistant vice president of Academics and Study Abroad Programs at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He vacations in the summer at the family camp
on Colchester Point in Vermont. Jim shares the “big yellow camp” with other UVM alumni: Barb Cunningham Miller ’72, Elizabeth Cunningham Amini ’69, and Bill Cunningham ’70, and their families. Esther Sundell Lichti lives in Lubbock, Tex., and is coordinator of the Women’s Studies Program at Texas Tech University, where her husband is a physics professor. They have two sons: Nathaniel, who lives in Portland, Oreg., and Steven, who lives in Johnson, Vt. Thomas Mowbray announces the publication of his new book, A Concert of Prayer. 1968 Linda Simet Klein and her husband, Bruce, fulfilled a lifelong dream when they moved North from Pound Ridge, N.Y., to a farmhouse in North Haverhill, N.H. Linda is thrilled to be closer to her former roommates, Meg Pond ’67 and Betty Smith ’69. Linda works as a health services director for Valley Terrace, an assisted-living community in Norwich, Vt. She is loving the cold and snow. “We moved here just in time to watch UVM beat Dartmouth in a really exciting hockey game. What could be better?”

1971 As I write this first weekend of May, I just got back from a trip to Boston, where I attended the UVM Boston Business Luncheon, featuring Tom Magliozzi of “Car Talk”. Joanne Czachor Magliozzi’s husband. Not only was it a totally entertaining presentation with insights into cars and the “Car Talk” show, it was a delight to see Joanne. Dick Peisch, Susie Campbell, Deborah Wright Boule, and Marty Grodsky Reed were also there. As you might imagine, Dick Peisch was the center attraction with alumnae at the head table. Before the luncheon, Dick wrote to me saying: “I have joined H. Dean’s fundraising efforts in Boston, New York City, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., and look forward to putting a (transplanted) Vermonter in the White House. It should be interesting.” Coincidentally, this week I heard from Frank Arkinson, who had news of UVM Coach Keith Cieplicki’s move to Syracuse before I got the news at UVM. Frank saw Joe and Martha Baker (’72) Forgiano at a Colgate hockey game this season. I couldn’t get any more gossip out of Frank, who still works and lives in the Syracuse area. I had a lovely Easter breakfast at the North Hero House and, of course, ran into Walt Blasberg. The Inn looks fabulous, and Walt has truly turned into innkeeper on the side. He still has a “real” job (Conning Insurance), which takes him all over the country. Tom Reilly called me this week as well looking for some help in “development.” There will be more about that in our next issue, but he is still trying to locate Jason Robards ’73. While I was in New York City recently, I ran into Bonnie Christensen ’73 in Grand Central Station. She was on her way from a meeting with her publisher. She’s got at least three books in the pipeline. Bonnie, Mags Caney Conant, and I discussed Bonnie’s writing and art over a breakfast in March after I returned from Rome, Italy. Bob Davis writes me on occasion from his home in Grand Isle. He is in great spirits and wants to be in touch with classmates. Did I mention that I heard from Nina Nadworny? She said, “Just hearing from you (meaning Vermont/UVM folks) makes me homesick. I’m moving to a different location in Phoenix.” Her email is nj0yrocks@earthlink.net. Also, Liz Mead Foster ran the Boston Marathon on April 21. She really didn’t want me to say anything, but I think this is such an amazing feat and her time was terrific. When I asked her about future marathons, she said that she’ll think about it. I also had lunch with Annie Viets recently. She’s teaching at the UVM School of Business through the summer, and in her spare time, she does her own home remodeling projects. Penelope Pillsbury traveled this winter to Washington, D.C., with the St. Paul’s Cathedral choir to sing at the National Cathedral during Vermont Day services. Susan Hynes Taylor wrote that daughter Muffie is very busy at Tuck. I saw Susan last summer in Summit, N.J., and look forward to another visit soon. Wendy Baker ’72 married Robert Minettie G ’71 and is now working for Harvard. Peter Spear wrote, “I’ve been on the go all winter and am finally sick of traveling: Sonora, Mexico, in January, Colorado in February, then Scotland last week, variously hunting and fishing. Peter runs his own natural resource consulting service. Gosh, I’ve dug up an old email from Sam Simmons, who wrote that he couldn’t attend Reunion Weekend ’02. He said, “One of the very few times we have been able to get to Burlington for an alumni event was last fall when we attended the 30th anniversary of the 1970 ECAC hockey championship. We had a terrific time reconnecting with lots of folks and have vowed to do what we can to get to other UVM alumni events. Maybe my digging into my old emails will elicit other reminders of those I have forgotten.

1976 Laura Schriesheim wrote that she is seeing more of Bob and Allyne Zorn, because their son is a freshman at Northwestern, and Dan Friedman ’75, who lives in the area. Laura continues to work as a social worker with young children and families. She has a daughter, who is in her first year at Yale, and a son in high school. After living on an island in Casco Bay for nine years, Mary-Evelyn Carpenter Hults has returned to Vermont. She is a volunteer reading assessor teacher, working on an oral history project and teaching drama to 4th and 5th graders. Mary-Evelyn reads Vermont Quarterly cover to cover and would like to read more of new faculty and programs. Congratulations to Warren Williams, CAS (School Administration and Planning), a retired administrator from the Barre, Vt., Area Vocational Center, who recently was awarded the John Barney Medal for contributions to humanity and to the Grand Lodge of Vermont Masons. After graduation, Gary Briggs received a master’s degree in higher education administration from Western Illinois University and began a 10-year career working on college campuses before going to work for a private consulting firm. Five years ago, Gary and his partner opened their own company, Aunt Sadie’s, Inc. Their primary business is wholesaling candles to the retail trade, and they have more than 3,000 customers in the U.S. You can find their candles in stores in all 50 states. Two years ago, they opened their own retail store called Aunt Sadie’s in Boston’s Historic South End. Gary noted that “although nothing could have prepared me for owning my own business, my accounting background has been a tremendous asset.”

1977 Hello to the class of 1977! Hope you had a nice spring after what seemed like an endless winter. Jim Edgerton wrote that he enjoys living in Shelburne, Vt., with his wife, Nancy, and children Kate and Mac. Nancy has her own business in speech pathology. Jim is a sales manager and partner with SymQuest, a Vermont-based company that does information and document management. Michael Eyre was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and installed as deputy commander of the 99th Regional Support Command in Coraopolis, Pa. The 99th has more than 25,000 soldiers serving in more than 190 units in five states. Michael has received numerous military awards and decorations. In his civilian career, he is manager of packaging engineering for Pactiv Corporation in Canandaigua, N.Y. He lives in Farmington, N.Y., with his wife, Susan, and their children, Michael, Patrick, and Megan. Nick San Martino wrote that he is living in Shannock, R.I., where he has been practicing physical therapy for the past 25 years, and he still enjoys it. Nick has three children, Marie, Bethany, and Nicholas. He currently works at Westerly Hospital’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Center. He was in Burlington last October, and he commented on how beautiful the campus looked and how lucky we all were to have gone to such a great school. Enjoy the summer.

1979 Ann McGovern MacAdams is living in Canton, Mass., with her husband, Don, and cat Cleo. Ann works for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection promoting composting and pesticide reduction. Ann and her husband garden and landscape organically, encouraging nature to thrive on “their little speck of suburbs.” I hope some of you are planning to come to Burlington this summer to enjoy our beautiful lake and endless activities for all ages.
