May Tinkham Rowell wrote, “Life at Wake Robin (CCRC) in Shelburne (Vermont) is wonderful. There are several UVMers here. We have a get together with the help of the alumni office at least once a year. The president of UVM comes to get acquainted and tell us about our university.”

Greetings to you all! It’s that time again. I received another nice letter from Hilda Sturdevant. She has lived in her retirement home in Langhorn, Pa., for more than three years, and she is very content. She has her own apartment during the winter months but keeps busy with many activities offered at the home, including exercise classes, bridge, a fine library, and opportunities to walk and visit different places every week. She still spends three months in the summer at her Grand Isle, Vt., camp. There, her daughter from Costa Rica is with her, and her son visits frequently from Tennessee, bringing extended family members. She feels she has the best of two worlds. I am sad to report that Marjorie Collins Ryan passed away in February. Our sympathy to her family, especially her brother Dr. Ray Collins ’35 and his wife. Personally, I can report that Peg Congdon ’35, widow of Dick Congdon, still lives in their St. Petersburg, Fla., home. She is very content. Her daughter, Carol, lives nearby, and her son lives in Burlington, so she sees them quite often. William and I were close friends of theirs when we spent winters in St. Petersburg, and I’m still in close touch with Ray. I can report that I have kept well this winter, and, come June, I will be at our camp on Colchester Point for the summer. William was a member of the Lions Club, an international service club, for more than 60 years, and I joined the club as soon as ladies were accepted. Hope to hear from more of you with news for the next issue.

Bill and Pauline Hunt Peters (’38) spend spring and summer at their cottage on Lake Champlain. Fall and winter are spent in Zellwood, Fla. Their son and his wife, Judith Doyle ’68, and three grandchildren and their families visit often. Their daughter is a researcher at National Geographic magazine in Washington,
D.C.

Not having received any news from my classmates, I submit the following in the hope that it will be of some interest. Your secretary flew to Tahiti in March and enjoyed a cruise to Moorea, Bora Bora, and the Cook Islands. No traces remain of the HMS Bounty, the infamous Captain Bligh, or Fletcher Christian. Final note: Beautiful Lake Champlain and its lovely islands surpass anything to be seen in the South Pacific.

Jennie Hutchins Everhart has moved to Idaho to be near her son and his wife and her three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. When she wrote, Mabel Clark Crispell and her husband, John, were looking forward to their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 30, 2003. Dorothy Holmes Griffith brings us up to date with a welcome report. Dot was a Burlington Free Press reporter from 1940 to 1952. After a five-year hiatus, she was employed by the State of Vermont Health Department until her retirement in 1983. Her three children all received degrees from UVM: Roger graduated from Bates College and received his master’s degree at UVM in 1978; William received his BS at UVM in 1975 and his master’s degree from Memphis State University. Jane Griffith Buskirk graduated from UVM in 1977. She still does some coaching in Alaska, where she taught for many years. Pauline Hunt Peters reported that she and husband Bill ’36 continue to spend the spring and summer months at their cottage on Lake Champlain and their fall and winter in Zellwood, Fla. They enjoy frequent visits from their son and his wife, Judith Doyle ’68, and their family as well as their daughter, a researcher for the National Geographic in Washington, D.C. We received sad news of the death of Marjorie Howe Buttolph on February 8, 2003, in Skaneateles, N.Y. Marge will be remembered for her election to Mortar Board and as one of the first female pairs of Kake Walkers to perform, teaming up with Amy Bronkhurst Taylor to represent Alpha Chi sorority. We have learned that Jean Cunningham Laplant and husband Ken are living at the Maples Apartments in Rutland, Vt. Your secretary suffered a fall in January, resulting in a fractured pelvis. Hospitalization, rehabilitation, and further recuperation at a local assisted-living facility made for an “on hold” status for two winter months. However, I returned home (ah, home sweet home) in time to look hopefully toward spring and a full recovery.
