Details will be emailed about this after Thanksgiving break. Permit rate information for all permit types can be found here.

Residential Student Permits

Resident Hillel student permits will go on sale through our parking portal at 10:00am Monday July 8th. All other residential permits will be sold via a lottery system, details below.

Lottery Process Overview:

Residential permits for the Fall semester will be sold for all areas via a lottery system. The permit totals made available depend on parking available in each area and will be as follows:

  • 170 Resident Purple Permits
  • 110 Resident Black Permits
  • 675 Resident Red Permits

There will be a separate lottery of 100 Gutterson Garage Only permits available only for Resident Red students who failed to get a permit from the Resident Red lottery. The odds of getting a permit depend on how many students end up signing up for the lottery in each residential area of campus.

Registration for the lottery will open at 10:00am Monday June 17th, and will remain open until Monday July 8th at 10:00am when the chosen students will be randomly selected and notified by email by the end of that day.

The chosen students will have until 8:00AM Monday July 15th to purchase their permit. Any unsold permits will be randomly selected by lottery again, and those chosen students will be notified by email. Any students that are unsuccessful in this drawing will be notified by email. Resident Red students who are unsuccessful in the lottery will receive information on how to sign up for a separate, second lottery for 100 permits that will be sold for the Gutterson Garage. The Gutterson Garage lottery sign up will be available from the time you receive the unsuccessful lottery email on Monday July 15th until 10:00am Monday July 22nd when the winners will be chosen by lottery and notified by email.

All residential students will know by no later than the end of day July 22nd whether they will have a parking permit for the fall semester.

How To Sign Up For The Lottery:

If you would like to participate in the lottery, please visit our parking portal after 10:00am on June 17th. Go to the permits page and you will see a button to join the permit lottery.

There will be separate permit lotteries held for our three residential parking areas: Resident Red, Resident Purple, and Resident Black. The lottery that you are eligible for will depend on the area of campus that you are living in. We have assigned all students an area based on housing data received from Residential Life. If you have changed your housing assignment recently and have the wrong area available to you online, please email our office at parking@uvm.edu with proof of your housing transfer at least 24 hours before the lottery closes and we will help get you into the correct area.

If you don’t know your housing assignment area (Red, Purple or Black), you will not be able to sign up for the lottery. If you are a transfer student and don’t get your housing assignment until after the lottery has occurred, you will not be able to get a permit through the lottery. Once you have a housing assignment, you will be able to buy permits online for your residential area if they didn’t sell out during the lottery process. If the permits for your area are sold out, you will need to wait until the Spring permit lottery to be able to obtain a permit.

Other Important Parking Information:

For more information on which lots you may park in with your permit please visit our website and scroll down to the appropriate permit type.

In order to be eligible to join the permit lottery you must have Sophomore standing or above (a minimum of 27.0 completed academic credits, as defined by the University here). First-year students are not eligible for permits on campus, information on exceptions to this rule located on our website.

There are no lot-specific permits. Permits are sold by residential area. Regrettably, we cannot guarantee that you will always have a spot in the lot next to your dorm.

If you live in Redstone Lofts or Redstone Commons you are NOT eligible for any UVM parking permits. Please check with Redstone Lofts or Apartments administrative offices concerning your need for parking.

If you live in Catamount East, please contact reslife@uvm.edu or (802)656-3434 for information regarding parking at that residence. Please note that Catamount East is within the Proximate Zone; residents are only eligible for a Commuter Evening Permit to park on campus.

Students with state-issued Accessibility Placards must register their placard with UVM Transportation & Parking Services. Guidance regarding accessible parking on campus can be found online.

Think carefully and plan accordingly regarding transportation alternatives in the event you cannot purchase a permit.  You must not bring a motor vehicle to campus if you have not purchased a permit in advance.  Motor vehicles parked on campus without the proper permit will be subject to parking violations which can be avoided with proper planning.

If you don’t know your housing assignment, you will not be able to sign up for the lottery. If you are a transfer student and don’t get your housing assignment until after the lottery has occurred, you will not be able to get a permit through the lottery. Once you have a housing assignment, you will be able to buy permits online for your residential area if they didn’t sell out during the lottery process. If the permits for your area are sold out, you will need to wait until the Spring permit lottery for the next chance to obtain a permit.

**NOTE: Under no circumstances are you allowed to register a vehicle that belongs to another student or their family. Any students found in violation of this policy will have their permit and their parking privileges revoked for the entirety of the academic year. ALL participants involved will be held accountable and no refunds will be granted to the people involved. Should you need to make a temporary arrangement please contact our office before adding a vehicle to your permit and we can assist you in the process.
