Dr. Maltby came to UVM in January 2000 after launching her academic career in Canada (1987-1991) and then Australia (1991-1999).  Dr. Maltby’s scholarship focused on public and community health, cultural health, and nursing education, garnering over $1 million dollars in external and internal grants.  She authored 30 peer-reviewed articles, 8 book chapters, and has given 63 presentations plus 32 presentations with students.  Her teaching focused on public health and cultural concepts, creating courses like Cultural Healthcare for undergraduates and Community-Based Participatory Research for graduate students. 

When she came to UVM, she developed the first semester abroad program for nursing students in Australia.  She was then successful in organizing a short-term study abroad nursing program in Bangladesh, followed by one in Belize (when Bangladesh became unstable) and an interprofessional program for both undergraduates and graduates to the Netherlands. 

Dr. Maltby was active in department, college, and university committees.  In addition, she serves as Co-Editor for the International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship.  She has been nominated for the Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award 3 times.  She received the Vermont Campus Compact Award for Excellence in Community-Based Teaching and was nominated for the national Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award.  Dr. Maltby received several Sigma Theta Tau, Kappa Tau Chapter awards including this year’s Advancing Global Health
