Dr. Charles Briggs, fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a highly regarded medievalist, is recognized as a brilliant teacher-scholar by his colleagues and students. His renown as an author and researcher is matched by his skill in the classroom and his dedication to the learning process.

Dr. Briggs not only shares his immense content knowledge with his students, but also fosters the development of sophisticated research and complex historical thinking skills. Dr. Briggs requires that his students engage critically with a variety of texts and images, while also learning about the mechanics of historical research, the development and substantiation of plausible arguments, and the complexities of the historical discipline. In so doing, he encourages his students to think critically about the humanistic enterprise, and how this endeavor will not only improve their educational experiences but also allow them to live their lives more fully once they leave UVM.

Dr. Briggs goes above and beyond expectations, frequently serving as an informal advisor of Honors and M.A. students, engaging in Writing in the Disciplines seminars, and participating in specialized workshops and in programs for TAP professors. Dr. Briggs has also been a vital contributor to the Honors College, teaching the first-year introductory seminar as well as special-topics courses at the sophomore level. He is a beloved teacher, well respected by his students and his peers for his dedication, collegiality, and hard work.
