For Cristine Maloney, an entry-level position at UVM Medical Center led to a master’s degree in medical laboratory science and a dynamic career ensuring high-quality patient care.

“Phlebotomy is the face of the medical laboratory, and my position in the lab is unique in that every day looks different,” explains Maloney, a phlebotomy technical specialist for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Maloney's role involves compiling and organizing information for efficiency and an enhanced patient experience.

“There are days when I’m in my office reviewing procedures, competencies, training checklists, and other workflow-related duties," said Maloney. "On other days, I spend time at UVMMC’s outpatient phlebotomy sites, collaborating with the patients and my staff. I frequently maintain and improve communication between the Phlebotomy department and other departments in the hospital, the UVM Health Network, and beyond.”

UVM’s master’s degree in medical laboratory science prepares students like Maloney, who has a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, for leadership roles providing critical information to patients and providers.

“At UVM, I was given the tools I needed to succeed as a student and community member, ready for the workforce," said Maloney. "From critical thinking and advanced research techniques to organizational skills, presentation techniques, and advanced knowledge of the medical laboratory, UVM’s Medical Laboratory Science master’s degree program set me up for success.”
