So what do we do about it? Next time you walk past a restaurant with candles on every table, and want to go in, ask yourself whether it's because it's brightly lighted, or beautifully lighted -- and whether the neighbourhood meets the same standard. Cast off as many assumptions as possible that you have about light, and the night, and try look at them both as the foundations of environments for people, as infrastructure that, with its other duties, should also support and give pleasure to human life.
