Abstract

Establishment of long-term sampling sites on the Mt. Mansfield Summit and Sunset Ridge for monitoring plant distribution and environmental conditions. Survey vegetation changes with elevation on the western slopes of Mt. Mansfield. Survey the floristic composition of vegetation on the western slopes of Mt. Mansfield based on elevation.

Methods

  • Past Methods (no longer in use)
    • Belt transects
      • Started: 1991-06-01
        Ended: 1994-09-30
      • Method Description: At 200 foot elevation intervals on hiking trails, belt transects were run on the upslope side of the trails, 25 transects of 25 m length and 1 m width. Presence/absence data were collected for vascular flora and for the most abundant visible cryptogams. Plus 2 - 1 m square quadrats per belt transect to survey the herb-level flora, including frequency and cover data.

    • Additional data collection
      • Started: 1994-05-01
        Ended: 1994-09-30
      • Method Description: Additional sampling included a 10 m diameter area for sampling tall shrubs and trees, including stem counts in two dbh classes (less than 2 cm and greater than 2 cm dbh) by species.
