Abstract

    Collect lichens for a lichen species list; collect lichens for elemental analysis; study the health and distributions of species most sensitive to air pollution; and assess the effects of air quality on lichens.

    • Survey and collection locations

      • Method Description: Eighteen locations, about 2 acres in size each, were used for the species survey and collections for chemical analysis. Locations represented the wilderness geographically and vegetationally. Undisturbed and disturbed habitats were sampled.

      • Method Description: Voucher specimens were collected for all species found. General health of lichens was recorded by looking for damaged or dying lichens on all trees where collections were made (at least 100 trees).

      • Method Description: Lichens were collected in spunbound olefin bags at four localities for laboratory analysis: north of Little Mud Pond, hill west of Lye Brook, west side of Bourn Pond and north of Kelly Stand Road. Species collected were: Cladinia rangiferina; Evernia mesomorpha; Hypogyminia physodes; and Parmelia sulcata. Ten to twenty grams of each species was collected at each locality.
