If you have ArcView 3.x software you can look at the Catskill vegetation layer by taking the following steps: 1) Open ArcView 2) Add Spatial Analyst Extension (File -> Extensions -> click box by Spatial Analyst) 3) Click on Views 4) Add theme (click on "+" button to right of "save" button and select Grid Data Source) 5) Select veg_11class data (..\catskill_veg_11class\veg_11class) 6) Click check box to left of theme name (veg_11class) to display data 6) Double click theme name itself (veg_11class) to open Legend Editor 7) In Legend Editor box click on "Load" button 8) In Load Legend box select catskill_veg_11class.avl (an ArcView legend file) 9) Accept defaults (Field=Value, checkmark by "All") and click OK 10) In Legend Editor box click "Apply" button (Legend should now have veg cover names and be color-coded by dominant vegetation) If you have ArcGIS 8.x or 9.x software you can look at the Catskill vegetation layer by taking the following steps: 1) Open ArcGIS -> ArcMap 2) Click on the button with the black plus on yellow background 3) In the ArcMap dialog box select "A new empty map" and click OK 4) Browse to the "catskill_veg_11class" folder, select "veg_11class.lyr" and click Add 5) Make sure there's a check mark in the box to left of layer name (veg_11class), in which case the legend should have veg cover names and be color-coded by dominant vegetation. In the "roads" folder there is a shapefile (major_cat_roads_nad83.shp) of major roads clipped to the area inside the boundaries of the Catskill Park. The metadata folder includes a 4 page metadata file (Catskill Mountains Vegetation Metadata.doc), as well as the USDA report (Catskill Mountains Vegetation USDA Report.doc) and peer-reviewed paper (Driese et al 2004 Catskill veg map.pdf) that are associated with this Catskills vegetation map.
