This year’s Sheep Day begins at 11:30 a.m. when we get the barn prepared for the shearer to arrive. Everyone needs to disinfect boots and shoes as they come in and wash their hands with soap and hot water. Fred (the shearer) will arrive around noon. The rams will be shorn first, and younger children can watch from outside the pen. We will also trim the sheep’s hooves while they are shorn.

Then the real fun begins!

Each ewe will be caught from the pen and put on a halter. She must be placed on a stand, hooves trimmed, FAMACHA scored, and body condition scored. She will be shorn and her wool must be carefully bagged with a tag with her name and the date put in the bag. Careful records must be kept of all of these steps and the shearing “table” must be swept off to get ready for the next sheep.  There will be something for everyone to do! We also like to have “before” and “after” pictures of each sheep. So, if there are any photographers, that can be your job! Everyone should get a chance to learn something at each station, even if you are not able to handle the sheep.

Program notes:

• Wear washable boots and eat lunch before you get there as it will be busy.
• Please check in and disinfect when you arrive. It’s recommended that you also disinfect before you leave, especially if you have animals at home.
• Parking is limited, so please park at the bottom of the driveway or at the Park-and-Ride (2 miles away) and carpool up the driveway.

The UVM STEM Ambassadors present unique hands-on STEM activities in this engaging morning of STEM learning. For youth in grades 3-9. To be held Saturday, November 2, 10:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. on UVM campus.

Come join in the fun and learn about some bovine-related topics! This event is for 4-H members between ages 8 and 18 as of January 1, 2025. 4-H members who turned 8 anytime this year (2024) are invited to participate as this contest counts for the new 4-H year.

Arrive 9:30 – 10 a.m. End time: 1 p.m.

What you need to know about this year’s Bovine Bonanza:

• Participants will be divided into five age groups: 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-18.
• Certificates of Participation will be given at the conclusion.
• There will be five sessions and each group will rotate through all of them.
• Questions will be on just about anything related to bovine. There will be no testing; however, there will be a few take-away questions to challenge you!
• Masks are optional. If anyone is experiencing any COVID-related symptoms, please stay home. Plan on eating before and after the event as we plan to finish a little after noon.
• We will be at the farm and traveling outside between sessions, so please dress accordingly and wear washable boots.

For senior dairy members (ages 14 to 18) this will be one of the events that you may choose to participate in to meet state level requirements.

Registration deadline extended to Oct 25 or until filled. Join 4-H and Vermont teens interested in developing their leadership skills in a fun-filled weekend at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vt., November 15-17. Come together with your peers to hone communication, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills. Bring what you learn back to your school and community to make a difference in the areas you are most passionate about. This weekend-long workshop will focus on hands-on learning through fun activities, skill-building games, action-planning, and meeting other teens from around the state. Fee for attendance (tbd), with meals and lodging included. Open to youth in grades 8 to 12.

The cost of the weekend has been reduced to only $220 due to generous gifts from State 4-H Foundation & Vermont Mutual Insurance. The registration fee includes two nights lodging in a double room at the Lake Morey Resort, all meals and snacks, and activity supplies.

Run by the VTeen Science Ambassadors, this afternoon of hands-on STEM activities is for youth in grades 3rd-5th. Free event and registration will open towards the end of October.

This day-long event, sponsored by the Lola and George Aiken Fund, is an annual event for youth in middle school through high school to learn about engineering, build skills, and network with engineering students, professors, and professionals in the field. This hallmark event of UVM’s College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) and Vermont 4-H will happen on Saturday, February 22 at the University of Vermont.

The day includes a morning of networking, discovery and learning through the Engineering Scavenger Hunt, as youth visit exhibits by local businesses, organizations, and student groups. Each table will display, or have interactive exhibits, showcasing the varied types of engineering and career pathways. The afternoon is packed with an array of workshops featuring hands-on learning and exploration, including robots! Lunch will be provided. Registration and more information will be available in early January.
