(OLLI AT UVM PRESENTS) Classics of the Foreign Film: The Seventh Seal with Barry Snyder and Rick Winston
Join film historians Rick Winston and Barry Snyder for a screening and discussion of one of the foremost exemplars of art house cinema: Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's 1957 The Seventh Seal. An allegorical tale about a disillusioned knight returning from the Crusades and pursued by Death as he journeys though plague-ravished Europe, the film is famous for its stark imagery, its symbolism, and its wry sense of gallows humor. Discussion will focus on the making of the film, Bergman's reputation as one of the world's leading filmmakers, the film's impact on the development of the "art house" movement in the U.S. and the changes in American cinema it helped bring about. The film is the introduction to an ongoing series of film screenings and discussion that will continue in the fall. Location: VTIFF, 60 Lake St, Burlington, VT 05401.
