The First-Generation Faculty Experience Workshop - All Faculty

THE FIRST-GENERATION FACULTY EXPERIENCE - ALL FACULTY

When: Friday, November 8, 2024, Noon-1:30 PM

Where: Microsoft Teams

Moderator: Nicole E. Conroy, Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Science, Department of Counseling, Human Development and Family Science, CESS

Workshop Description: First-generation support initiatives in higher education primarily focus on the retention and academic success of undergraduate students. However, first-generation status remains relevant to the careers of first-generation faculty (FGF; i.e., first-generation students who go on to join the professoriate). This session will include a brief overview of the ways that first-generation status affects FGF experiences in the academy, followed by strategies for successfully navigating the academy, and an opportunity for FGF community-building. Panelists, all of whom are FGF, will share recommendations and resources for mentorship, networking, and professional development, and general success in the academy.
