In December, 1997, we (Marc Caffee, Christine Massey and Paul Bierman) drove more than 3000 km and collected 78 samples from 29 sites in central and northern Namibia.

Soaking in the sun at the top of our first inselberg, sample NAM-3, just south of Windhoek.

We collected samples from granitic, gniessic, and sandstone inselbergs in climates ranging from sub humid to hyper arid.

We collected quartz and chert clasts from pavemnet surfaces in order to estimate the longevity of such clasts and the stability of such surfaces.

We collected sediment from several rivers in order to estimate basin scale erosion rates and learn more about the storage of sediment on the landscape.

We collected sheilded samples from a quarry to estimate muon-induced production of 10-Be and 26-Al.

Highlights of our trip include:

Outcrops of quartz so pure that they even make physicists happy.

The Hoba meteorite (we left it unsampled).

Fantastic views of wildlife unknow to Vermont!
