Rebecca Stanfield McCown

BIO

Dr. Rebecca Stanfield McCown is Director of the National Park Service’s Stewardship Institute. She is currently on detail to the White House Council on Environmental Quality, serving as Deputy Director for Environmental Justice Public Engagement. Her work has focused on supporting park service staff and partners, through strategic planning and technical assistance, to build partnerships, advance creative approaches to public and community engagement, and develop leadership skills for public land managers. 

As Director of the Stewardship Institute, Rebecca managed programs that focused on enhancing public engagement, deep community engagement, cultural competency and diversity skills, leadership development, and evaluation and promotion of practices that contribute to successful public land management. Rebecca has worked on national projects that include Department of Interior Environmental Justice community engagement initiatives, the NPS Urban Agenda, addressing harassment and hostility in the workplace, advancing facilitation and dialog skills National Park Service-wide, and peer leadership development programming both nationally and internationally. Rebecca has developed and implemented community engagement training in Indonesia as part of a training series coordinated with DOI-ITAP and USAID.

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources Recreation and Tourism from Colorado State University and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Natural Resources from the University of Vermont. She dissertation was awarded the Best Dissertation Award by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in 2012. She has been adjunct faculty at the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and serves on their Board of Advisors. Rebecca is a member of the Network for Landscape Conservation’s Coordinating Committee and Co-Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group and is a Trustee for The Nature Conservancy Vermont Chapter.
