BIO
Susanna Schrafstetter received her PhD in 1998 from the University of Munich, Germany. Before coming to the University of Vermont, she taught at the University of Nebraska and the University of Glamorgan (UK). She has held fellowships at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich, and the Leibniz Institute for European History in Mainz. Her most recent work focuses on Jews who went into hiding in Germany during the Holocaust, and on German-Jewish refugees in Fascist Italy. She is the author of Flight and Concealment: Surviving the Holocaust Underground in Munich and Beyond (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2022) and the co-editor (with Alan Steinweis) of The Germans and the Holocaust: Popular Responses to the Persecution and Murder of the Jews (New York: Berghahn, 2016). Among her most recent publications are “Ferramonti, not Palestine: The Failed Aliyah bet of the ‘Benghazi Group,’ 1939-1943" Holocaust and Genocide Studies 37, no. 3 (2023): 373-389 and “The Geographies of Living Underground: Flight Routes and Hiding Spaces of Fugitive German Jews, 1939-1945,” in Lessons and Legacies 14: The Holocaust in the 21st Century: Relevance and Challenges in the Digital Age, edited by Tim Cole and Simone Gigliotti, 111-138 (Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 2021).
