Devin Colman

Lecturer

Director of Historic Preservation Program

BIO

Joining the faculty in 2024, Devin Colman spent the previous 18 years with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation as the State Architectural Historian. In that role he oversaw state and federal regulatory reviews; managed state and federal grants; and facilitated listings of Vermont properties in the State and National Registers of Historic Places. A graduate of the UVM Historic Preservation Program, he has lectured and taught classes at UVM for many years.

Born in California and raised in Minnesota, Colman has lived in Vermont since 2004. He earned a B.A. in Art History and Studio Art at Colby College, and after graduating worked as a fine art gallery and museum curator. A chance encounter with Dion Neutra, son of renowned modernist architect Richard Neutra, set Colman on the historic preservation career path. Today his research focuses on mid-20th century modernist architecture and design, specifically as it developed and exists today in Vermont. In addition, Colman studies the art and architecture of the New Deal in Vermont, specifically the development of State Park facilities and murals in public buildings. He serves as the Vermont National Associate for the Living New Deal program.

Colman is involved with historic preservation activities at the local, state, and national levels. He serves on the boards of Preservation Burlington, the New England Chapter of Docomomo-US, and the New England Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.
