The Entomology Research Laboratory represents a team of scientists committed to the development of effective biological control agents for forest, landscape, greenhouse and vegetable insect pest management. Insect pest problems are addressed with an interdisciplinary approach, using insights drawn from senior scientists, the assistance of specialized technicians, and some graduate students. Emphasis is placed on practical aspects of research to solve ‘real world’ problems. Though focused on agricultural problems of Vermont, our projects have national and international significance as well. Through our work we attempt to develop management options that are environmentally sound, economically viable and sustainable, and encourage their implementation through extension and education.
Vermont Research
Coordinate statewide research, design and test survey and detection methods and efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi for pear thrips. Coordinate research on IPM of hemlock woolly adelgid, including studies on coldhardiness and efficacy of insect-killing fungi. Oversee survey and management projects in cooperation with state forestry agency.
Manage educational and public awareness programs for the introduced exotic pests: Asian longhorned beetle and hemlock woolly adelgid.
International Research
Oversee collaborative research on a broad range of insect pests focusing on development of fungi for biological control. Specific projects include Sunn Pest in Central and West Asia, Thrips palmi and diamondback moth in Taiwan, hemlock woolly adelgid in China, whitefly and sorghum chafer in Ethiopia.
