Founded in 1791

We were the first institution of higher education to declare public support for freedom of religion and the first university to admit women and African-Americans into Phi Beta Kappa. Today, we’re nationally recognized as a leader on pressing issues like sustainability and planetary health.

UVM’s Larner College of Medicine is the nation’s seventh oldest medical school, with an innovative curriculum that emphasizes early clinical exposure and hands-on, active learning. Many undergraduates also study biochemistry, microbiology, molecular genetics, and neuroscience with Larner faculty.
