A small shrub and the alternate host of the White Pine Blister Rust. Leaves are deciduous, simple, alternate, usually palmately lobed (maple-like in appearance). Twigs are with prickles (Gooseberry) or without prickles (most Currant). Older bark may peel, giving the stem a ragged appearance. Fruit is a berry with or without bristles on its surface.
