Plant Identification
A tree found on dry, limestone sites from southern New England to the central U.S. Leaves are deciduous, obvate, and coarsely serrate with glandular teeth. Twigs are 1/8", acute, and glabrous. Fruit is to 1" long and more or less sessile with 1/2 enclosed in a thin bowl-like cap with indistinct scales. Bark is ashy gray and shallowly furrowed or scaly.
