Fieldwork Summary

This past semester, spring 2011, I had the opportunity to intern for Third Planet Windpower LLC under the Director of Engineering. I performed high-level statistical and mathematical analysis for proposed wind farm development sites. In addition, I use advanced scientific models to predict wind flow and study the effects of wind on turbines to maximize energy outputs while minimizing financial and construction costs. I spent most of my time working through data sets in Microsoft Excel using high-level computations, with data sets consisting of 10,000+ entries. I took initial meteorological data from met-towers and transformed the variables into statistics needed to assess wind farm production. I also used ArcGIS mapping software to produce maps of turbine locations for wind farm development projects. In order to be successful in this internship one must be fluent in Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS, and understand or have taken a high level collegiate statistics class.
