Summary of Internship
This semester I
worked with Allan Bullis through Efficiency Innovations. With several other
students, we created a group called Common Sense Energy. Within this group
there were a variety of jobs and skills that were developed. This ranged from
marketing, sales, promotion, and physical labor. Throughout this semester, this
group promoted energy efficiency and conservation by creating flyers to hand
out to local residents and students. Many of the flyers we handed out went to
houses downtown that had fairly massive ice dams hanging from their roofs,
which reveals that heat is escaping the house. After learning to do some
door-to-door sales promotion for energy audits and efficiency, Allan took each
group member on at least one residential energy audit. During the audit I
learned how to do a blower door test and use a thermal camera to identify where
a house is losing the most heat. I also had the opportunity to learn how to
blow cellulose insulation with AllanÕs brother Lee. Throughout the semester I
attended a few energy committee meetings, with Allan, to learn about what
policy and energy efficiency changes the Chittenden County was trying to
develop. The last couple weeks of my internship I coordinated and managed a
table in the Davis Center, which promoted energy efficiency and conservation.
At the table we educated the public about several types of insulation, how to
use the thermal camera, and tips on how to conserve energy in oneÕs dorm/home.
