Biomass Energy Resource Center (BERC)

The Biomass Energy Resource Center is a nonprofit organization that works on a community level to provide the resources needed for building biomass energy systems across the country. They work with schools, businesses, commercial buildings, hospitals and other community-scale buildings to aid them in creating central heating systems that are fueled by local woody biomass sources.

The project that I was assigned for my internship at BERC was continuing progress on two different databases. The first is a list of potential suppliers of biomass resources across the country. These could include anything from businesses in furniture production, construction or lumber to companies that build caskets, make steeples or produce newsprint. The second database is a list of the companies that are purchasing biomass directly from its source, such as sawmills, logging businesses and wholesale wood-based manufacturers.

Throughout the semester, my internship hours consisted of filling in contact and location information for the hundreds of companies on each database. As more information gets added, both databases will aid tremendously in locating sources of biomass that can be accessed locally by those with biomass energy systems installed.
