VEEP Vermont Energy Education Program

This semester I have been Volunteering at the Vermont Energy Education Program (VEEP). I have been primarily working with Nick Richardson, the organizations Development Developer. VEEP is a program of Vermont Investment Corporation and is funded by the Vermont Department of Public Service, Efficiency Vermont, Washington Electric Cooperative Inc., The U.S. Department of Energy, and participating Schools. VEEP was founded in 1979 in response to teacher requests for information about energy and environment during the oil embargo and long gas station lines of that year. VEEP provides programs for schools, community and church groups, libraries, and museums upon request. VEEP also provides training and curriculum materials for Vermont teachers on the topics of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and conventional energy sources. VEEP uses an engaging and hands on approach to enlighten teacher and students about the science and technology of energy production and about the efficient use of resources.

Throughout the nation, there are several small programs with similar goals as VEEP. Unfortunately there is little to no communication between the programs/states. This semester, Nick and I contacted various Energy Educators and began making connections with hopes of forming a national energy education community. We shared information about VEEP while learning about effective methods and programs used by others. This summer I will be working as VEEPÕs Summer Coordinator Position and we will assist planning and execution of four teacher trainings on photovoltaicÕs and wind generators for schools throughout Vermont. VEEP has tangible and exciting dreams for energy education in Vermont. VEEPs projects are becoming increasingly more creative, exciting and effective. VEEP would be interested in providing future internships for renewable energy students.
