Elizabeth S. Chen, PhD is Associate Director of Biomedical Informatics in the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, Assistant Professor of Medicine, and Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Vermont. She received a BS in Computer Science from Tufts University, PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University, and has previously held positions at Columbia University/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Partners HealthCare/Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Chen’s research interests are in three main areas: (1) developing, evaluating, and improving clinical systems (e.g., electronic health record [EHR] and clinical decision support systems), (2) adapting natural language processing and data mining techniques for discovering disease knowledge in clinical and biomedical text, and (3) leveraging and enhancing standards to facilitate data integration and semantic interoperability. As part of NIH/NLM-funded research, her current work is focused on studying the collection and analysis of family and social history information in the EHR.
