NO FEDERAL LEGISLATION PROTCTS THE PRIVACY OF HEALTH INFORMATION

Kasper Zeuthen, The Daily Yomiuri (Tokyo) September 7, 1999, SECTION: Pg. 7 TITLE: Reportage Nippon / Health information moves too freely in United States // acs-EE2001

"The major issue in this country is that there is no federal legislation to protect the confidentiality of health information," said Kathleen Frawley, vice president of the American Health Information Management Association.

"The reason why there is a lot of concern is that more and more information is being obtained by organizations that have access to patient information for financing of health care services. The information might be provided for legitimate purposes, but then there is no limitation on what they can do with the information after that," she said.
