Clifford Fishman, a law professor at Catholic University in Washington agreed, noting, "If the government is unable to protect us, our institutions and our economy from criminal activity, then many of the rights we hold so dear, including the right to privacy, may be little more than a hollow promise."

As elected officials and as private citizens, we respect and support the individual right to privacy. But as local prosecutors, sworn to protect our fellow citizens, we strenuously oppose any attempt to burden criminal investigations and prosecutions with undue restrictions that would undermine our efforts to bring criminals to justice.

Fortunately, the same technology that is destroying privacy also makes it easier to trap stalkers, detect fraud, prosecute criminals and hold the government to account. The result could be less privacy, certainly - but also more security for the law-abiding.
