In private conversations with government officials and military officers in China, we found that Beijing opposes the US alliance system because it sees its purpose to be containing China. Indeed, US forces in East Asia are increasingly seen as a major obstacle to China's objectives in the region, which range from assertiveness in the South China Sea to its long-held goal of national unification.
