DETERRENCE DOES NOT PREVENT WARS

NUCLEAR WEAPONS HAVE NOT PREVENTED WARS

Possession of nuclear weapons has not prevented wars, in various regions, which directly or indirectly involve the major powers. They were deemed unsuitable for use even when those powers suffered humiliating military setbacks.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS DO NOT PREVENT WARS — THEY MAKE THE WORLD FAR LESS SAFE

In his Nobel Lecture, Professor Rotblat stated, "As for the assertion that nuclear weapons prevent wars, how many more wars are needed to refute this argument? Tens of millions have died in the many wars that have taken place since 1945. In a number of them nuclear states were directly involved. In two they were actually defeated. Having nuclear weapons was of no use to them. To sum up, there is no evidence that a world without nuclear weapons would be a more dangerous world. On the contrary, it would be a safer world."

WE CANNOT DETERMINE WHETHER NUCLEAR WEAPONS HAVE DETERRED WARS

The extent to which the existence of nuclear weapons and fear of their use may have deterred war -- in a world that in this year alone has seen 30 military conflicts raging -- cannot be determined.
