A very tolerant, medium-sized, extremely valuable tree in the northeastern U.S. Leaves are usually 5-lobed along the entire margin. Twigs are lustrous with imbricated, brown, sharply pointed buds. Fruits are U-shaped and mature in the fall. The bark is variable, gray (often with a brown tinge), and furrowed-scaly.
