Looking west from the intersection of Archibald and North Winooski Avenues the filling station that sat on this corner in 1932 now is a mowed lawn. The last listing of a gas station at this location appears in 1949, and the building was probably torn down sometime shortly thereafter.[1] Both brick garages formerly belonging to the Burlington Rapid Transit and Vermont Transit Co. still stand, although their usage has changed. In July of 2000, Vermont Transit Co. consolidated its repair facilities in White River Junction, Vt. and vacated the barn that had housed bus fleets since they hit the Burlington streets in 1929.[2] Soon thereafter, the Burlington Community Land Trust and Housing Vermont, both local non-profit housing organizations, teamed up with the federal Housing and Urban Development agency to transform the former bus facility into commercial space and mixed housing.[3] The bus garage on North Winooski Avenue is now commercial and retail space, while the bus barn on Riverside Avenue was converted into residential units. Along with the redevelopment project at this site, 25 units of residential rentals were constructed in the row of cream and grey three-story buildings.[4] 1.
