What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in Burlington, Vermont?
This structure has survived many changes to the exterior including new cedar clapboard and paired second floor entrances. The main block of the structure is a two and one half story duplex with parallel side entrances at the two-story ell-shaped wings on either side. A two-story addition to the rear of the building has been made, but it is not clear when. The building stands facing south in the middle of the block between North Street and Monroe Street.
There is not much mention of the address in the city directories until the early 1900s [1] . The building was apparently a boarding house that in 1902 was the home to a number of laborers and workers both men and women. Later directories listed the occupants as "colored". This mention does not begin until the 1902 Burlington City Directory. The residence had much turn over [2] as evident by the different names that appear in each subsequent directory listing. The property seems to have continued to be a boarding house and later small apartments up to present.
