What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in Burlington, Vermont?

Back to North Champlain Street

230 North Champlain Street

This structure faces west between Manhattan Drive and Cedar Street.  This structure appears largely the same as it did on the 1877 Birds Eye View Map.  The house is a gable front, two-story ell-shaped main block two bays wide, with a south facade one-story porch that has been since closed in which encloses the main entrance.

The first known occupant of the house was Edmund O'Neil [1] , an employee of George L Linsley, who moved from his house on Pine Street [2] in 1871.  He lived there with his family until after 1885 [3] .  By 1890 the property was owned by H. Babcock, which may have been Hiram Babcock of 99 Church Street or Horace Babcock who lived at 230 North Champlain Street with James M. Cosgrove the captain of the No. 3 Fire Station [4] .  Horace Babcock left by 1912.  By 1932 the house had changed hands and was home to a number of laborers over the subsequent years.
